'Gully Boy' Sequel Tunes Up, Filming Anticipated by Year-End
Six years after its initial release, the beat of 'Gully Boy' is set to return. Director Zoya Akhtar, the visionary behind the acclaimed 2019 film starring Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt, is reportedly developing a sequel to the musical drama. Production is slated to commence by the close of 2025.
A New Rapper's Ascent
According to Mid Day, 'Gully Boy 2' will introduce a new protagonist immersed in the underground rap scene, distinguishing itself from the original film's narrative centered on Murad (Ranveer Singh). The sequel will purportedly showcase a fresh ensemble cast, chronicling the journey of a different rapper navigating social challenges and class disparities.
Arjun Varain Singh Takes the Director's Chair
While Zoya Akhtar and Reema Kagti will remain as producers and writers, Arjun Varain Singh will helm the sequel as director. Singh, celebrated for his 2023 directorial debut, 'Kho Gaye Hum Kahan', has reportedly impressed Akhtar with his unique artistic sensibilities, which she believes align perfectly with the essence of 'Gully Boy'.
Sources indicate that Zoya and Reema have always felt the universe of 'Gully Boy' had more stories to tell, and Arjun brings a fresh perspective to the project. The team is confident that Arjun will adeptly continue the narrative, preserving the distinctive charm of the original film.
Released in 2019, 'Gully Boy', drawing inspiration from the lives of Mumbai rappers DIVINE and Naezy, garnered widespread critical acclaim. Ranveer Singh's performance was particularly lauded. The film also achieved significant box office success, resonating with audiences through its authentic storytelling, compelling performances, and memorable soundtrack.
